Tires and Wheels
The IS’ standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the A5’s standard 45 series tires. The IS F Sport’s 265/35R19 rear tires have a lower 35 series profile than the A5’s optional 40 series tires.
For better ride, handling and brake cooling the IS has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the A5.
The IS has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the A5; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed.
Suspension and Handling
The IS 350 F Sport handles at .93 G’s, while the A5 pulls only .84 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.
The IS 350 F Sport executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1 seconds quicker than the A5 (25.4 seconds @ .71 average G’s vs. 26.4 seconds @ .69 average G’s).
For better maneuverability, the IS’ turning circle is 5.5 feet tighter than the A5’s (34.2 feet vs. 39.7 feet). The IS AWD’s turning circle is 4.3 feet tighter than the A5’s (35.4 feet vs. 39.7 feet).
Chassis
The Lexus IS may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 200 to 300 pounds less than the Audi A5.
The IS is 4.3 inches shorter than the A5, making the IS easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.
Cargo Capacity
With its sedan body style, valet key, locking rear seatbacks and remote trunk release lockout, the IS offers cargo security. The A5’s hatchback body style and non-lockable folding seat defeat cargo security.
Servicing Ease
J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Lexus service is better than Audi. J.D. Power ranks Lexus second in service department satisfaction. With a 30% lower rating, Audi is ranked 18th.
Ergonomics
The IS’ instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The A5 has neither an oil pressure gauge nor a temperature gauge.
To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the IS offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The A5 doesn’t offer cornering lights.
A power rear sunshade is optional in the IS (except F Sport Design) to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The A5 doesn’t offer a rear sunshade.
Model Availability
The IS is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The A5 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
