For enhanced safety, the front and second-row seat shoulder belts of the Lexus LX have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision. The Chevrolet Suburban doesn’t offer pretensioners for its second-row seat belts.

The Lexus LX has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Suburban doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The LX has a standard Secondary Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Suburban doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the LX. But it costs extra on the Suburban.

The LX’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Suburban doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the LX and the Suburban have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty

The LX comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Suburban’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.

Lexus’ powertrain warranty covers the LX 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Chevrolet covers the Suburban. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the Suburban ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The LX’s 6 year corrosion warranty has no mileage limitations, but the corrosion warranty on the Suburban runs out after 100,000 miles.

Reliability

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the engines in the LX have an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of some of the engines in the Suburban.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the LX has a 776-amp battery. The Suburban only offers a standard 730-amp battery.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the LX’s reliability 30 points higher than the Suburban.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Lexus vehicles are more reliable than Chevrolet vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Lexus first in reliability, above the industry average. With 39 more problems per 100 vehicles, Chevrolet is ranked fourth.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Lexus vehicles are more reliable than Chevrolet vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Lexus second in overall reliability. Chevrolet is ranked 16th.

Engine

The LX 600’s standard 3.4 turbo V6 produces 54 more horsepower (409 vs. 355) and 96 lbs.-ft. more torque (479 vs. 383) than the Suburban’s standard 5.3 V8. The LX 600’s 3.4 turbo V6 produces 19 lbs.-ft. more torque (479 vs. 460) than the Suburban’s optional 6.2 V8. The LX 700h’s standard 3.4 turbo V6 hybrid produces 37 more horsepower (457 vs. 420) and 123 lbs.-ft. more torque (583 vs. 460) than the Suburban’s optional 6.2 V8.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the LX gets better mileage than the Suburban:

Regenerative brakes improve the LX 700h’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Suburban doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The LX has a standard locking fuel door. The fuel filler door is not lockable on the Suburban. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the LX’s standard front brake rotors are larger than those on the Suburban:

Suspension and Handling

The LX F Sport Handling has front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the LX F Sport Handling flat and controlled during cornering. The Suburban RST/Z71/High Country’s optional suspension suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

The LX has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Suburban doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

The LX 600 F Sport Handling handles at .75 G’s, while the Suburban High Country 4WD pulls only .53 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the LX’s turning circle is 2.1 feet tighter than the Suburban’s (39.4 feet vs. 41.5 feet). The LX’s turning circle is 5.3 feet tighter than the Suburban RST 4WD w/24 inch wheels’ (39.4 feet vs. 44.7 feet).

Chassis

The LX is 2 feet, 1.8 inches shorter than the Suburban, making the LX easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the LX’s middle and third row seats recline. The Suburban’s third row seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the LX easier. The LX’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 31.6 inches, while the Suburban’s liftover is 37 inches. The LX 600 Ultra Luxury’s liftover is only 31 inches.

The LX’s cargo area is larger than the Suburban’s in almost every dimension:

The LX has a standard third row seat which folds flat into the floor. This completely clears a very large cargo area quickly. The Suburban doesn’t offer seats that fold into the floor.

Towing

The LX’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Suburban’s (8000 vs. 7500 pounds).

Servicing Ease

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Lexus service is better than Chevrolet. J.D. Power ranks Lexus second in service department satisfaction. With a 25% lower rating, Chevrolet is ranked 13th.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the Suburban LT/RST/Z71/Premier/High Country, the LX has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The LX’s front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Suburban’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully.

If the windows are left open on the LX the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. (This window function must be activated by your Lexus service department.) The driver of the Suburban can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The LX has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Suburban doesn’t offer headlight washers.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the LX has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The Suburban doesn’t offer cornering lights.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the LX to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Suburban doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The Lexus LX has power folding mirrors that offer unparalleled convenience while maneuvering in tight places or parked. With the mirrors folded it’s easier to walk past and help prevent parking damage. The mirrors can be quickly unfolded when the driver is ready to leave. Power folding mirrors costs extra on the Suburban and aren't offered on the LS.

The LX has standard front air conditioned seats and offers them optionally in the second row. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The Suburban doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats for the second row.

The LX has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the Suburban.

The LX offers optional massaging front and rear seats (rear massaging seats standard on Ultra Luxury). Massaging seats aren’t available in the Suburban.

The Lexus LX has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located on the rear view mirror. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. Chevrolet charges extra for Homelink® on the Suburban.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Lexus LX has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Only the Suburban LT/RST/Z71/Premier/High Country offers wireless charging. The LX also offers Qi charging in the second row seat. The Suburban doesn’t offer wireless charging in its second row seat.

The LX 700h’s Advanced Park can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Park will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Suburban’s automatic parking system does not offer parking by remote control.
